Love matcha in Jozi? So do we! Joburg's matcha scene is younger than Cape Town's but catching up fast, and these are the spots actually treating it as more than a menu afterthought. Each does it a little differently, so the best one depends on what you're in the mood for.

A quick tip before you go. Most of these whisk to order, but matcha is easy to drown in syrup. If you want to taste the powder itself, order it hot or ask them to go light on the sweetener.

PopO Teahouse

A proper teahouse in Rosebank, full of Japanese energy and a calm upstairs spot made for slowing down with a cup. Regular matcha obsessives rate it as a favourite, the brown sugar matcha gets a special mention, and you can buy loose-leaf tea and matcha powder to take home. Lovely if you want the ritual, not just the drink.

Kōhī by ifuku

Tucked into the leafy 44 Stanley courtyard in Milpark, this one wins fans for its matcha above all. The oat milk cinnamon matcha has people calling it the best they've ever had, and the courtyard setting is a genuine reason to linger. Worth knowing it leans aesthetic and the prices reflect the postcode, but the cup delivers.

Love Matcha Fourways

The Joburg outpost of the flavour-forward favourite, and a great gateway if matcha is new to you. Expect fruity riffs, friendly guidance, and staff people single out by name in their reviews. Less about ceremonial purity, more about a fun, pretty, approachable cup. Easy to find in Fourways Mall.

here joburg

A big, airy Rosebank coffee shop with cool art, a live DJ at times, and matcha on the menu alongside the serious coffee. More all-rounder than dedicated matcha bar, so come for the room and the vibe as much as the cup. A good spot to work or meet someone, with parking just below.

Live Café

A small, much-loved Sandton spot two minutes from the Gautrain station, ideal for a matcha on the way into the office. Tiny, friendly, and consistently well reviewed, with regulars calling out the matcha specifically. Closed Sundays, so plan around it.

Home of the Bean

A Maboneng institution in the Arts on Main complex, beloved for calm service, fresh food, and a warm, light-filled room. It's a specialty coffee spot first, but a reliable, relaxed place to take your matcha while you work or wander the precinct. Great for a slow morning downtown.

A last thought. If you want the full tea-ritual treatment, PopO and Kōhī are the ones to sit with. If you're after a fun, fruity, beginner-friendly cup, Love Matcha won't steer you wrong. And if matcha is really just an excuse to find a good room to work in, here joburg and Home of the Bean have you covered.
