Meet the founder, Michelle Legge
Superlatte began long before there was a product, a logo, or a market stall.
I was born in rural South Africa near the Lesotho border, where life revolved around open spaces, fresh air, and being outdoors. Looking back, nature was never something I scheduled into my week. It was simply part of everyday life.
As an adult, I moved to Melbourne and built a career in marketing and communications. I loved many aspects of city life, but over time I found myself feeling increasingly disconnected from the things that had always grounded me. The pace was different. Nature felt distant. Life became busy in ways that were not always healthy.
At the same time, I was navigating endometriosis.
Years of pain, inflammation, surgeries, and uncertainty led me to become deeply interested in nutrition and lifestyle. Like many women living with chronic health conditions, I spent countless hours researching ingredients, food, and daily habits that might help me feel better and regain some sense of control over my wellbeing.
That journey eventually led me back to South Africa and, ultimately, to Cape Town.
For me, Cape Town represented something I had been missing for years. Mountains. Ocean. Space. A slower rhythm. A chance to spend more time outdoors and reconnect with the lifestyle I had always valued.
Dogs became a big part of that chapter too.
Today I share my life with 3 rescue dogs, and many of my happiest hours are spent on mountain trails with them. What started as casual walks eventually grew into a hiking community that now connects more than 600 members through dog-friendly adventures around Cape Town. The group is still going strong today.
Those hikes taught me something important. People are hungry for simple things. Fresh air. Good company. Better habits. Small daily rituals that make life feel richer.
Around the same time, I was becoming increasingly fascinated by ingredients such as matcha, turmeric, beetroot, spices, and other plant-based foods with long histories of use around the world.
I loved the ingredients. I was less enthusiastic about many of the products available at the time.
Too many relied on artificial flavours, excessive sweeteners, or complicated preparation. The healthy option often felt inconvenient.
So I started experimenting.
What began as homemade blends for myself soon became blends shared with friends. Then friends started sharing them with other friends. Eventually, I decided to see whether strangers might like them too.
In 2017, I took a small stand at Cape Town's Oranjezicht City Farm Market.
That was the beginning of Superlatte.
The response surprised me. Customers came back. Cafés began requesting the blends. What started as a weekend market project gradually evolved into a business.
Today, Superlatte products are enjoyed across South Africa and beyond, but the philosophy behind the brand has not changed.
I still believe good ingredients matter.
I still believe daily rituals can have a meaningful impact on wellbeing.
And I still believe some of life's best moments happen outdoors, with muddy dogs, tired legs, and a warm drink waiting at the end of the trail.
Superlatte is simply an extension of those beliefs.
